I was amazingly lucky: I had marvelous friends. I cannot explain why.

Tino Bierling was one of the most marvelous. Tino was younger than I, bisexual, and had a great circle of people who loved him and helped him during the years I was in Berlin. We never had a sexual relationship, but I loved him and he was always welcome in my studio. Any time.

Later, Tino had to take jobs, in the art world as far as I knew, to support himself. A true free spirit, he was not made for that kind of life. IMO, his art suffered and never again reached the inspiration of the 60s.

Looking through all my photos, this photo stood out, with its marvelously placid, simple, open, clear expression. To me, it is an unbearable treasure that brings back a whole era.

Tino started doing The Path

But he was not able to get to San Francisco and even Jeno

who was here often, was busy elsewhere and unable to help him.

Unfortunately, like so many magnificent people, Tino, and Jeno also, succumbed to AIDs. To me, tragedies beyond description.

Here he is in all his simple, honest, open glory, the way I knew and loved him.
