Beryl Cunningham was one of the many black artists who were able to make a place for themselves in Europe at a time when the same was almost impossible, or at least unpleasant, in the US.

Beryl and many other black artists were accepted and treated equally and wonderfully in most of Europe. Some even enjoyed a certain positive response due to their color, towards which Europeans of that time had little or no prejudices.

Beryl spent a decent amount of time in Berlin. She met me in the Eden Saloon, together with many other black friends of hers who also had me do their portraits. She eventually had a certain success in films in Italy, in good part due to my photos.

This absolutely magnificent photo is one of my real favorites. The kind of photo, for which one prepares in the studio, and then can only hope will just happen. I love it.
