As all can see, I was being photographed for the East Berlin
Communist records.
I suppose I was already infamous by then. Probably what saved me a
lot of trouble was that Bertolt Brecht's widow, the great actress
Helene Weigel, who was the director of the Brecht Theater in the
East, decided she wanted me to photograph all of the current Brecht
productions at that theater, as well as rehearsals, etc. That gave me
an official letter that I was on official business and I became
familiar in a positive way to the guards/authorities, since I had to
cross the border a lot to do that work.
