Jochen was my first male lover after arriving in West Berlin. He lived in East berlin. But I met him while visiting friends in West Berlin. At that time, before the wall, East Berliners could visit West Berlin readily, as long as they returned to the East. Many worked in the West and then returned to the East, exchanging the West marks that they earned at the rate of 5 or more East Marks to 1 West Mark. I even had a cleaning woman from the East until the wall went up.
Jochen never did leave East Berlin, even though I offered him the opportunity to be smuggled out safely. He may have had family that he was afraid for, or just liked his life there.
Jochen had something very special about him in every good way. I still miss him.
