This is another of those photos, for which I thank God constantly.
Dieter was an aspiring young stage designer when I met him. We had
little in common personally. I met him with Jochen Ansorge at the
Eden Saloon. He was not just very straight, but, at that time, very
wrapped up in women, so we might not have gotten to know each other. But
he had just had to leave a living situation with a woman and Jochen
asked if Dieter could stay in my studio until he found something. The
studio had a pleasant little room on the north side
that could be used, so I let him stay. I had just leased the studio
and was wondering what and how to do with it.
But Dieter was a stage designer who could build anything and offered
to build whatever I needed in return for his board. That was the best
thing that happened to me, as he took me to the best places for
materials, showed me everything I needed, then built some marvelous
structures, like an enormous, elevated desk, constructed under the
huge studio window, with the light coming over my left shoulder,
textbook perfectly, and much more, as well as painting the place.
We got to know and like each other very well. Dieter was a child of
Berlin and tolerant of all life styles. Unfortunately, we did not
stay in contact steadily after he left and I have no idea what
happened to him (If anyone knows, please tell me).
But Dieter was thin and somewhat odd-looking, with a prominent nose
and amazing strong features. This photo captures something few got to
see: a depth and elegance and a truly elevated soul that I cherish
having known.
