Berlin had enough sorrows and tragedies to appreciate some lightening up.
A certain lightness and humor ran through my fashion work, and that
was very daring for those times. Fashion then was mostly seriously
dull and few realized that clothes could be highlighted quite well in
humorous situations.
Fortunately, I could usually rely upon the people I liked to work
with for some spontaneity and Axel could even be counted upon for
some wildness when the atmosphere could use it.
After all, catalog fashion photos are about as boring as photography
can get. I wanted to be quite far away from that. And having grown up
in a family of resident women's wear clothing buyers in NYC, I wanted
a bit of rebellion.
